We want to empower people to make knowledgeable decisions about their health and wellbeing.
Welcome to your bi-weekly digest from JC Health Foods: where science meets the natural health aisle.
This week, we’re looking at how vitamin D and abdominal fat may affect one another, what research says about diet and menopause symptoms, and how ginkgo biloba may support recovery after cataract surgery. Plus, we’re breaking down what to look for in a quality castor oil.
We have been in Jefferson City for over 20 years because we believe you deserve real answers, not fads.
Questions about vitamin D, menopause support, ginkgo biloba, castor oil, or building a wellness routine that works for you? Stop by JC Health Foods, and we’ll be glad to help you sort through the options.

This Week in Natural Health
Vitamin D Deficiency Turns Deadly With Belly Fat
A study of more than 5,500 adults over 50 found that vitamin D deficiency combined with abdominal obesity raised six-year death risk by 123%, far more than either factor alone. Belly fat appears to lower circulating vitamin D, while low vitamin D may deepen the inflammation abdominal fat already drives. The two conditions seem to reinforce each other.
Diet Outperforms Exercise For Menopause Relief
Randomized trials found no evidence that exercise eases menopause-specific symptoms like hot flashes, despite its general fitness benefits. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and soy milk were tracked with fewer symptoms, while more poultry and skim dairy were tracked with worse ones. Oxidative stress may link diet to symptom severity.
Ginkgo Biloba Protects Vision After Cataract Surgery
A randomized trial of cataract patients found that 200 mg of daily ginkgo biloba extract for six months nearly doubled the share of eyes still clear at three years, 80.6% versus 54.5% on placebo. Laser retreatment fell from 20.4% to 6.1%. The herb's antioxidant properties may explain the gap.

FROM OUR SHELVES
Why Castor Oil Quality Matters
Castor oil is a thick, plant-based oil pressed from castor beans and commonly used to moisturize dry skin, condition hair, and support the skin barrier.
Its naturally high concentration of ricinoleic acid helps lock in moisture, making it a popular ingredient in body oils, scalp treatments, and other personal-care products.
Quality castor oil should be expeller-pressed, hexane-free, and USDA Organic. That purity standard is what we look for when stocking our organic carrier oils. Ask us which bottle is right for you.
